Charity, GO VOTE! | Michigan family Photographer

Giving is Awesome was founded in December of 2008. It was a simple premise: photographers give a portrait shoot and products to a family who deserves it, but can’t afford it. In the twelve weeks since then, over 530 photographers have donated over $550,000 worth of custom portraiture to families who couldn’t afford it. Artists in places as far flung as Australia, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, and Mexico joined in. Giving is Awesome is also featured in this month’s issue of Professional Photographer magazine, and we’re looking to continue to spread the word about giving. Lenovo and Microsoft are sponsoring the ‘Name Your Dream Assignment’ contest, which grants $50,000 to the photographer who wins to shoot whatever/wherever they would like.

What better way to spread the word than to load 12 photographers into a tour bus and hit up cities with Giving is Awesome shoots? The blog traffic generated by the tour would easily reach 50,000 photographers per day, thus multiplying the number of photographers who sign on for the 2009 version of Giving is Awesome. (The goal: 15,000 photographers for the 2009 edition.)

…but how would we decide who to shoot for those tour bus Giving is Awesome giveaways? Why, we would rely on our friends at ConKerr Cancer, an international charity, to provide our subjects: children currently living with cancer. We’d be bringing awareness of both utterly smashing organizations to light, spreading the photographic love, AND rockin’ a tour bus! Now we’re talkin’!

What if this project doesn’t cost $50,000? Easy! ConKerr Cancer receives the funds to purchase cameras for their chapter coordinators, less the expenses of the tour. This allows the impact of the tour to go much further than the people on the bus, or even the photographers associated with Giving is Awesome. It’s the ripple effect in its truest form, giving sparking giving sparking giving.

I spoke to the Winner Tina O., nominated by Kristin Schuster.

Here is some of what Kristin wrote in ( it is edited for privacy reasons)…

“I wanted to nominate a very special person for your giving is awesome photo contest.  Tina O. is a RN that I work with…  She is an awesome person, and gives nothing but the best to her family, friends, and coworkers…
Tina is a great person.  She is kind and empathetic.  She is a great nurse.  And like most nurses, she is the ultimate caregiver.  Her family depends on her for everything.  She runs the ship at home.  She has four great kids and a husband who loves her.  She also has her first grandchild on the way…”

I would also like to note, that Kristin was the first person to nominate Tina. She also had another co worker send in an email attesting to how wonderful Tina is…

“I really can’t say enough about Tina and her family Kim.  She and her husband make their family a priority in their life- they are the house that all of the kids gather at.  All of their childrens’ friends look to Tina and her husband for guidance in their own lives.  They are always talking about how important their children are to them- they have one daughter getting ready to have their first grandchild, a daughter who is a doll making in Japan but has flown back to Michigan to be with her mom.  She is a tremendously hard worker- she is one of our most beloved charge nurses- which is rare for someone in charge of nurses :)   ha.  but seriously,…
We all hope and pray that Tina is going to… come through this difficulty to share more times with us… I guess I don’t know what else to say.  We are all in shock and want to do anything we can for this amazing person.”

As a mom and a health care provide myself, I know first hand how hard it is to step outside of that roll and let someone else take care of you. By giving so much of herself, I just could not pass up giving something back to Tina. I look forward to meeting Tina and her family this weekend for their photo session.
